By 2017 online advertising will exceed newspaper, radio and magazine ad expenditures combined! Only TV will be larger. This surge is led by search engine advertising.
Online advertising will continue to be the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. advertising industry, climbing 14 percent annually to $69.4 billion by 2017, according to a study by Pricewaterhous Coopers.
Print media will continue to struggle. Not surprisingly, the newspaper industry has the lowest digital adoption, with just 5 percent of newspapers’ consumer revenue coming from digital last year. “Uptake will increase slowly, with digital reaching only 11 percent of the total by 2017”, Pricewaterhouse Coopers said.
Magazine spending will likely continue to shrink over the next five years, while book publishing grows only modestly.
What is Search Engine Advertising?
Search engine advertising is a specific segment of online marketing that the search engines themselves promote as a means to show ads as a result of a person entering a key phrase into a search engine. The dominant player in the search-market being Google, and it’s partners.
Sometimes those ads will show up at the top of the page and sometimes on the right side of the pages. They will also show when the user goes to each page of the results. These are text ads consisting of a headline, a line or two of copy, and a link to a web page.
Often called “search advertising”, for short, the ads are paid for on a per click basis. You, the advertiser, only pay when someone clicks on your ad and is sent to your website.
In Colorado, search engine advertisers have a choice of which geographic area the ads are shown in, or about. So we could attract people out of state to your in-state service. More commonly, we target specific cities or neighborhoods.
What The Projections Mean To Small Business Owners
The ad projections previously mentioned, and others, are a trend that is apparently never going to revert back to the old methods, which means it would be wise for small businesses to become accustom to diverting funds to search engine advertising if they haven’t already. Unless a specific industry-related print vehicle has specific benefits for your business in a population segment that does not use computers, such as the elderly.
Camrud Advertising is a Colorado PPC advertising agency that had the foresight to start the shift from print advertising to search advertising as early as 2004. Subsequently we have a ten year lead over many other advertising firms in Colorado for pay per click advertising (PPC) campaign set up and management.
This experience is extremely valuable to our clients, both in terms of effectiveness and cost savings on click fees.
