How Much Does It Cost To Advertise on Google?
There is not a simple answer for this “Google advertising cost” question, because there are variances in geography, industry, goals and many more factors.
The Google Ads platform is used to advertise your website on the Google network. This is an auction-style advertising platform, not a flat rate program. This means that the advertiser sets their own price! Which means you may need to ask “how much is a hot lead worth to my business?” and “how many leads to I want each month?”
The answers to these questions determines the cost for your particular advertising program. After talking I can give you a range of click-costs based on your industry.
The range of costs are constantly in ebb and flow by time of year, time of month, and time of day, as well as other factors such as:
- Other advertisers online at the same time as you
- Those advertisers’ bids
- Those advertisers’ budgets
The way to approach Google advertising is to assume that you need to do it – which is an excellent assumption – and then determine an amount that a new customer is worth to you, and never bid more for a lead the who ill net you a profit. For some businesses this cost is $5, while for others it might be $50.
You will then set your cost on a per-click basis for phrases that a typical customer of yours might type into a Google search to find you. The click cost will take into account that you will not secure a customer with every click. It may take two, or three.
How Do I Pay?
Google advertising is charged by one of two methods:
- Pay per click, aka PPC, or
- Cost Per Impression, aka CPM

You Never Pay More Than You Are Comfortable With to Advertise on Google
Don’t let the keyword bidding process scare you off. The basis of the determining how much to advertise on Google is two fold: the phrase bid, and the daily budget.
The phrase bid varies with each phrase you want to have an ad shown for, with you setting more for phrases that are perfect for your business, and less for phrases that have good potential, but may not easily get you a customer. Remember, you always have a choice.
The daily budget is independent of the phrase costs, but is dependent upon how many phrases were clicked and at what cost. You will probably have from a dozen to several hundred phrases, all with a maximum bid. As a phrase triggers an ad to be shown Google tallies the cost of that click and applies it to the daily budget. Once you reach your daily budget, your ads stop showing.
The nice thing about pay per click advertising is that you never pay more than you have budgeted for the day, so at the end of the month there are no terrible surprises.
